The 'midges' situation is really putting me off considering the course which is a big let down. I don't want to be covered in spots, is this the case? Steph Replies:
Hi,
Thank you for your message. I would not
worry about the “midges” situation, they are more a nuisance than anything
serious. We will loan you 'midge hoods' and if you stock up with insect
repellant and bring as much as you can that works for you then that will help
keep them away. There are steps you can take to reduce the effects even more.
Some of us take “Vitamin B1” tablets. These can be purchased from health stores
such as Holland and Barratt. If you take one of these tablets each day for a
month before coming on the course and while on the course you will not be
bothered by the midges. The vitamins give off a scent which the midges don’t
like and they tend to leave you alone. Please note that these have to be B1
tablets and not simply B. If you have any questions please let me know. Steph x

Hey, do you have to do a presentation at the end? I'm not comfortable with that, however the course seems great
Steph Replies:
Hi, thank you for your question. Success on the course
does entail doing a presentation about your experiences afterwards to your
sponsoring Rotary Club. Many of the awardees who attend are uncomfortable with
the idea of doing this at the beginning of the course, however, by the end of
the course you will have gained skills which will make the presentation much
easier. I can speak from personal experience when I say this as I felt the same
when I attended the course. The presentation is about what you gained from the
course and is a way of thanking your sponsoring club for allowing you to attend
and gain an amazing once in a life time experience. You will also get all the
help and support you could ask for. If you still have doubts do not hesitate to
contact me again. Many thanks, Steph.

Steph Replies: Hugh is safely locked in my cupboard ready
for next year. We have left him with enough food and water to make sure he
survives. Not really, his lift arrived, just a little later than the rest.

If my teenager wants nothing to do with going to the RYLA Camp, how do you propose I get her there. She really needs to go.
Steph Replies:Thank you for your question. Unfortunately you cannot force your
teenager to attend the RYLA course. The application process for the course
should have involved interested participants applying to their local Rotary Club
which is then followed up by an interview. The successful applicant will then be
awarded a place on the course. If your daughter does not want to attend this
course then she should not have made it through the interview process. Clearly
something has gone wrong in the selection process. The course is a fantastic
opportunity for those who are willing to learn, but if she does not want to
attend she will gain very little from the course as she will not be open to
development and, worse, may hinder the development of others on the course. I
would suggest you contact her sponsoring Rotary Club and discuss it with them as
soon as possible. I am more than willing to talk to her if she would like, as I
am a past awardee and I know how much of an impact it has had on my development.

Is it possible to bring a camera or is it likely to get lost or broken given the activities we will be involved in?
Steph Replies: You are more then welcome to bring a camera
with you as many awardees do, however we must state that if you decide to bring
any valuable item with you then they are your responsibility and we cannot be
held liable for any loss or damage caused whilst on the course. An alternative
could be to bring a disposable camera.

Where is the application?I can not locate it on this site? Steph Replies: The club application from is available
under Information / Club Information and then click on Link. The
actual Awardee Registration Form is not on the website but has been emailed to
the Rotary Club RYLA Contacts.
Please note that all the places have been taken for the 2011 course. For
individuals who want to apply, you need to contact your local rotary club.

do i get a award or certificate at the end of the course. would the course help my university application?
Steph Replies:
Yes, at the end of the course each RYLArian is given a certificate. Although the
course does not provide you with UCAS points, it would be classed as an
extra-curricular activity. I understand that extra-curricular activities are
highly regarded by universities. (In addition it may also be a conversation
starter at an interview)

Hi,
my names Richard Malloy and i was on one of the previous RYLA camps of 2010 in district 1040.
i was wondering if i would be able to apply to assist the 2011 camps with the waveriders. but i wasnt sure how to go about it or if i'd be able to, so i thought i would ask here.
i would really love to go and help
thank you
Richard
Tim Replies: Hi Richard and thanks for the offer but it's
something you would need to take up with the Waveriders themselves. By all means
get in contact with them, their email address is on the address list you got. We
always need help on the first day with the car parking and helping out, and
again on the last day, if you fancy that. If you do I'll put you in touch with
another RYLArian who will probably be helping out and you can fix something up
between you. Let me know. Cheers.

please contact me back at Steph replies: Hi Jeremy,
Unfortunately I think you have the wrong website. This is the website for RYLA
in district 1040 (North and West Yorkshire). We don’t have a shop where awardees
can purchase items.

When are the RYLA applications due?
Tim Replies: We are still taking 'bookings' from Clubs up
until the end of November, after which we will allocate the 64 places to the
clubs that have booked their places. Club's then have until April to select and
register their awardees.

mattress. See you tomorrow!

Hey I was just wondering if taking my digital camera on the course is a good idea? I want to take pictures and movie clips for my presentation after the course but don't want it to get damaged or anything. x
Steph replies: The choice to bring your digital camera is
entirely up to you. I will stress however that if you decide to bring your
camera it will be your responsibility to look after it and we cannot take any
responsibility if it gets broken etc, so please don't bring a really
expensive one. For most activities your mentor will be with
you, so you might want to see if they will look after it for you while you take
part in activities and even get a photo of you doing them for your
presentation. It's always good though to have memories
of what will be a fantastic week in your life! x

What if i am in a dorm with people i dont like?
Steph Replies:
Unfortunately there will not be much you can do about it. The amount of time you
will spend in your dorm is very minimal so it should not be an issue, although
RYLA is a leadership course and part of leadership is the ability to work with
people, some who you may like and some who you may not

Im starting to get my things ready for RYLA and was just wondering if
the trousers had to be combats or will tracksuit bottons be suitable? Laura x
Steph Replies: Hi Laura, tracksuit
bottoms will be fine, by combat style trousers we mean thin ones which you can
move easily in and will dry quick, basically anything but jeans. Hope this
helps. See you soon. Steph x

Hey....I've been selected to attend the leadership course and I've recently receieved my course handbook. On the kit list is says swimwear so do we have to bring our own or are you giving us one to use during the water based activities?
Steph replies: You
will need to bring your own swimwear. It is on the kit list for your benefit
more than anything. You may take part in certain activities which will result in
you getting wet. We advise you wear your swimwear under your clothes. Swimwear
is designed to get wet where as normal underwear may get damaged as a result of
the water. You will be provided with a splash suit and buoyancy aid but it is
just an extra precaution.

Hello...I've just been
selected for the leadership course and a friend of mine who did it last year said the midges on a night can be really terrible. Is that right and is there anything I can take beforehand or bring to keep them from biting me do you know?
Steph Replies: Hi,
I’m afraid to say that your friend is right. The midges at Hebden Hey can be
terrible. You could take Vitamin B1 tablets; they seam to deter the midges. You
can get them from Holland and Barratt and need to start taking them a couple of
months before attending the course.

How do I register for the RYLA?
Tim Replies:- Hi there. At the moment local Rotary clubs from the District are
recruiting and selecting awardees to sponsor attending the courses. If you email
us at ryla@blueyonder.co.uk and
include what area you are from then we will be able to put you in touch with the
Rotary club for your area. You can also look at
www.rotary1040.org to see where your
local Rotary club is and make an approach to them direct if you would rather.
Good Luck.

oops, didn't know it had come up that many times, it's the same question for the same person, sorry!
Steph Replies:
No worries, the website
does that if you don't refresh the page after adding a question....MS Frontpage...grrrrr...I
don’t think you have anything to worry about on the interview front. There is
not a formal order which rotary clubs have to follow when recruiting their
candidate. Some clubs will ask their candidates to complete the application form
as part of their selection process. Other clubs will select their candidate
first and then ask them to complete the form. The best thing you could do is
attend your interview on 24th February and ask the Rotarians .But be
prepared beforehand, everything you may want to know is here on the website
which you have looked at. If you have any other queries please ask,. and good
luck with the interview! Thanks Steph.

Who can join RYLA?
Steph Replies:
RYLA is not something in which you 'join'. RYLA is a residential youth
leadership course for 16-18 year olds who have demonstrated leadership qualities
within their school, work place or community. Candidates are interviewed and as
a result sponsored by their local rotary club.
If you are interested in
taking part in RYLA in 2010 then you need to contact your local rotary club. You
can find your local rotary club by visiting:
http://www.rotary-ribi.org/districts/clubs.asp?DistrictNo=1040

hi, on the kit list it says about "additional footwear, clothing for canal based activities (to throw away after) is this stuff that can be thrown away or is it stuff that is going to be thrown away (if that makes sence)
Thanks

Hi.
Basically, the clothing you will wear for the canal based activities has a high
chance of getting ruined. So you don’t have the throw them away its entirely up
to you. x

are walking boots vital for the course? i don't have any at the moment so that means i will have to buy some for one weeks use. cheers.
Steph Replies: I wouldn’t say they were
vital as such, more an advice. Some good strong walking shoes are a must and
walking boots provide much more support to your ankles and generally have a
better grip. I would advise getting some if possible or alternatively you can
ask friends and family if they have any in your size. You can usually get some
good ones fairly cheap at somewhere like sports soccer, outlet camping shops
such as at Freeport etc, or even at camping shops, as a lot of them have sales
on at the moment.

ok, i agree with you on the straightners rule. i dont want to get blown up, plus we'll be getting muddy and wet anyway! thanks. ps. do work on him for the last night though. Steph Replies:-
I'll do my best! ;)

- 12 Jun 2009
- 10:49
why is there a strict rule about no hairdryers or straightners?
Steph Replies:-
There are two reasons, the main reason for the rule is the cost.
Within the centre the electricity is charged by a coin meter. Basically
hairdryers and straighteners eat the electricity. Also you will not be going out
in public so there isn’t really need for them. The second problem, as Tim
pointed out to me when I asked him the same question when I was on the course,
is one of 'Health & Safety'...they always say that I know!...but the electric
circuits are (excuse my ignorance but it's not my jargon here but his) not wired
up in the correct "phasing'' and as a result any serious drawing off of power on
one can lead to them all fusing! Tim reminds me that a couple of years ago
someone smuggled a drier in and it went 'bang!' in the socket and made their
hair curly, not straight. Ouch! So, if you bring 'em, then don't expect to use 'em
(unless I can twist Tim's arm on the last night to find a suitable socket that
can stand it!.....I'll work on him!)

hello, i havent received my course handbook yet and i was wondering when i will get it? cheers becca x
Tim Replies:- Hiya Becca. You should have got it by now....I'll email the
Rotarian from your sponsoring club and ask them what the delay is.....you may
want to do the same. In the meantime, there's a link to the handbook on the
website, by all means have a read of it on here.

- 01 Jun 2009
- 18:41
how can i print off an application for the RYLA camp from the website?-
Tim Replies:- Hi there. The bottom answer is you can't. All RYLA Awardees are
recruited by their local Rotary Clubs for this summer's RYLA Courses, not
centrally by us. We 'just' arrange and run the courses on their behalf. To get a
place on RYLA, whether it's here in Yorkshire or elsewhere, you need to get in
contact with your local Rotary Club. Try the links to the Rotary websites on the
home-page and they should lead you to the contact details of the Club for where
you are. Hope that helps. Good Luck! If you are from Yorkshire and you are
struggling, then send us an email to
ryla@blueyonder.co.uk and I'll put you in touch direct with your local
club...after all, we are the best RYLA in the country, if not the world, and it
would be a shame to miss out!

Hi, I've looked through the photos from past Courses and see some where people are lifting others through wire web type things, Do i have to be lifted like that or can i 'refuse' because i am wayyy to heavy to be lifted, even by the strongest of people lol.
Steph Replies: - The course is designed to
develop leadership and teamwork skills. When you arrive you will be put into a
team. All the teams will take part in the same activities throughout the week.
We will not be telling you how to complete the tasks so it will be down to
yourself and your team as to how you tackle them. I honestly don’t think you
have anything to worry about. I hope this answers your question. If you have any
other questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

- 21 May 2009
- 11:10
i know there is no signal but why are mobile phones not allowed on the course?
Steph Replies: - The main purpose of a
mobile phone is to make calls, and you cannot do this so there is no need. Also
most mobile phones are expensive and we cannot be responsible for the loss or
damage to peoples mobile phones

hi,
ive read over the course handbook, and i am now very very worried! i didnt know we have to wear swimsuits! also is everyone suppoesed to perform on talent night? becca
Steph Replies: -
Hiya Becca. You have
really nothing to worry about! I remember thinking the same before I went on the
course. The swimwear is on the kit list for your benefit more than anything. You
may take part in certain activities which will result in you getting wet....very
wet! We advise you wear your swimwear under your clothes, which is then under
your splash suit and then under your bouyancy aid and crash helmet! They
are designed to get wet and your usual underwear may get damaged by the water.
The last thing we want is Tim parading in his 'Speedos'...so don't worry! With
regards to the talent night everyone does not have to perform individually. It
is an opportunity to entertain the other awardees if you have a particular
talent. However you will be asked to perform for everyone as part of your group.
It will be down to you and your group as to what you do and what role you play.
You really don’t have anything to worry about. You are not going to be judged on
what you do, it is merely for entertainment purposes only. If you have any other
queries let me know. Hope this has helped? Thanks Steph

- 02 May 2009
- 10:34
Do i have to plan a skit before hand ( i can't play, sing or dance etc haha) or do teams sometimes get together and decide on what to do during the course?
Steph replies:
The skit night is a
chance to entertain the group. If you have a skill such as play, sing, dance etc
then this would be the perfect opportunity to put it into practice. All the
groups will ‘perform’ to the group. You will be put into your group from the
first day of the course so have just short of a week to plan. Although there is
no allocated time for groups to work on a performance over the week there will
be opportunities. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions?

- 14 Apr 2009
- 14:46
will we be staying in dorms with girls and boys, in out teams? and how many people will stay in each room? thanks, becca xx
Steph replies: Hi Becca. There four dorms, 2 male and 2
female. We don't have exact figures yet of how many people will be in each dorm
but if you work on a total of 32 people attending each course that's an average
of 8 per room. It all depends on the male/female split though. Hope that answers
it?

- 06 Apr 2009
- 19:39
is there any mobile or internet connections there?
Steph replies: Unfortunately there is is nothing. No phone signal, no internet,
nothing. Plenty midges though!!!

- 06 Apr 2009
- 14:43
will i forced to do anything that i feel i am unable to do?
Steph replies: There may be tasks you feel you are unable
to do. However you will be part of a team. All team members support each other.
There will be tasks you cannot complete on your own, thats where teamwork comes
into play.

- 06 Apr 2009
- 14:42
what happens if i get put into a team with people i dont get along with?
Steph replies: The aim of the course is to teach
leadership. As a potential leader, the situation should not arise. Everyone is
there for the same reason and everyone will have concerns. Learning to deal with
those concerns will help you later in life.

other details. It may be your sponsoring club who have written to you. Dont

Steph replies: Congratulations on being selected. There are a number of
activities, all fun, when you get the course handbook that will give you more of
an idea of what to expect. A minor point, course one is in July, its course 2
thats August... might just want to check.

just received a RYLA candidate application letter from my school and tried to do some research on this website into what the course is all about. am sorry but why is everyone saying this website is well structured and designed, it is terrible there is very little description about the course itself and everything is muddled, some text is unreadable due to other boxes of text overlapping, it is extremely hard to find your way around the web site and overall i would say it was clotted and the info i need to find simply isnt there
tip re think the entire layout of the website as i believe u are putting off potential candidates
thank you
bob -
Tim Replies:- Thanks Bob for your honest feedback. The
web-site is in need of some major work doing on it, I agree. It has grown over
the years and it has already been recognised it needs restructuring to make it
more reader friendly and easier to navigate. The work to do that is on-going,
but I'm sure you'll appreciate doesn't happen overnight, we are, after all, all
volunteers who have day jobs to do as well as organising and running RYLA. I
hope you persevered and found what you need though on it, it's all in there

Thank you for your cooperation
Scott -
Tim Replies:- Hi Scott, thanks for your question. I guess
if you got a leaflet from your school, then your local Rotary Club must have put
them round. You could go back to the teacher who you got it from, they should
know who sent them, or alternatively, if you send us an email to
ryla@blueyonder.co.uk and tell us
which school it is then I can forward your interest on to the local Rotary Club
to you, who will be the ones recruiting from your school. Hope that helps and

Tim Replies:- Hi, I'm not sure that you are asking that
question on the correct website as everything about the District 1040's RYLA
Programme, dates, how it's filled etc etc is on the site already. Use the link

In some of the pictures, some people are wearing medals. are these given to them or did they bring them of thier own accord?
Tim Replies:- On each course the RYLArians are split up
into four equal teams and there is a healthy competition between them to gain
the highest score from all the activities that we do. The team that wins is
announced on the final night and also presented with a trophy and individual
'winners' medals. Winning is not about stamina etc, but more about putting into
practice all the teamwork and leadership skills that you will develop. You can

navy blue colour. Ah well,....one year!

- 10 Jun 2008

roughly, how many people are going?
Tim Replies:- Hi. Roughly, there are 36 RYLArians on each
of the 2 courses, 4 Rotarian Mentors, A Rotarian Course Director and Deputy
Course Director and about six Waveriders. So that makes it about 48 people on
each of the two courses.

ironing so much I'm sure we can find you a job! I've never had anything ironed

who do i arrange transport to the centre with?
Tim Replies:- Hi, it's down to the Rotary Club that is
sponsoring you to take you there and collect you afterwards to bring you home.
They should be in contact with you and if they havn't been then give the contact
Rotarian a call or drop them an email. Their details should be on page 3 of the
Course Handbook that you will have got, or be getting very soon. If you hit a
brick wall then get back to me with pleasure on
ryla@blueyonder.co.uk and I'll make sure it's
passed on to the right person.

You have an outstanding good and well structured site. I enjoyed browsing through it.
Tim Replies:- Thanks for the remarks and I'm glad you
enjoyed browsing the site, it makes it worthwhile to receive positive feedback.
A good motivator to keep on trying to master 'Microsoft Front Page'...not the
best of IT tools. Cheers.

Not much on my mind right now, but it is not important. I have just been letting everything happen without me. I just do not have anything to say right now.
Tim Replies:- Thanks for that. Sometimes it's not what you
say, but what you don't say when it's important, that says most about you.
That's the perfect isnihgt in a thread like this.
